Welcome to our school!

Stop. Think. Listen. Do your best. Focus on your work and be a success!

SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL BY VISITING DONORCHOOSE.ORG!

The year is passing by very quickly, and we still have so much to do! The big event we are focusing on is TCAP testing. Your child needs to be at school every day, so they will receive the instruction needed to prepare for the tests. Their scores on the test will be a part of their final end of the year grade in 3rd through 5th grades.

We have been having issues with some of the policies and procedures that have been in place all year. I would like to remind you of these things, so that you and your child can focus on them between now and the end of the school year. This list of procedures has not been put in place to make your life more difficult, but to keep our school safe, structured, and organized.

  • Students must be at school each day. Be on time!
  • If your child is out sick, please send a note to the office explaining the absence. If you have been told you must have a doctor’s excuse in order for the absence to be excused, we will only except a doctor’s excuse that was given to you when you took your child to the doctor. We will not accept a doctor’s excuse that has been given to you or faxed to the school, because you call and tell the doctor your child is sick. We do call the doctor’s office, if we have questions.
  • Do not use your cell phone while in the car rider line. There are still parents doing this, and this is not a safe thing to do. Our school resource officer will be checking on this during pick-up.
  • When students are going home with each other, each child must have a note giving permission. If one child does not have a note, they will not be allowed to go home with the other child. We will call you, so you will know to pick up your child. We must have a note. Calling the school last minute to tell us the child will be going home with someone is not an option at this time. The office staff is very busy, and they may forget to give someone the message. This policy has been put in place to guarantee the student’s safety.
  • Communicate with family and friends that will be picking your children up in the afternoons. Our car duty staff has been put in situations recently that make it difficult to know who the child needs to go home with. If there is a change in who will be picking up your child, send a note.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Welcome to the Website of Dyllis Elementary School. We are a K-5 school with an enrollment of 191 students. All students are scheduled in classes with credentialed teachers who are highly qualified and teach in their area of certification.

The school staff consists of one full-time principal, twelve regular classroom teachers, one resource teacher, one Title I teacher and one literacy leader, who are all full-time. In addition, we share the following positions with neighboring schools: one physical education teacher, one guidance counselor, one music teacher, one speech/language therapist, one occupational therapist and a school psychologist. We also have one part-time librarian. Our support staff includes a secretary, an educational assistant, a Title I assistant, a literacy assistant, a nurse/special education assistant, a computer lab technician and a part-time technical secretary. Other employees at the school include four food-service workers, one full-time custodian, one part-time custodian, and one full-time Before and After School Program (B.A.S.P.) instructor.

Last year Dyllis Elementary School launched a reading initiative to insure that all students at every grade level would receive a minimum of ninety minutes of reading instruction daily. Following the Tyner method for teaching reading, students receive both whole group and small group instruction. Teachers utilize phonics and whole language methods to insure that students learn to read fluently, comprehending the reading material. Students are tested several times throughout the school year to determine their appropriate level of instruction. The children are then separated into small groups according to their reading level so that students are challenged at their level of instruction.

A variety of co-curricular activities are available at Dyllis Elementary School. Among these are: Community Celebrations, a K-2 Science Club, SMART (Stimulating Maturity Through Accelerated Readiness Training) Program, a Fall Festival, Boy Scouts, 4-H, River Ridge Environment Camp, After-School Book Clubs, Math Tutoring, Reading Tutoring, Think Link, Accelerated Reader, RIF, Book Fairs, Honors Program, Field Day, Chorus, Spring Carnival, Apples for the Students (Food City), Kroger’s Earning plus Learning, Campbell Soup Labels, Presidential Physical Fitness, Box Tops for Education, and other field trips.

If you are interested in visiting Dyllis Elementary to observe our academic program and experience our friendly, nurturing environment, please call the school for an appointment.
